Topic Overview
Enacted in 1965, Medicare was a program that was begun to provide health care to seniors 65 years and older. The program was later expanded to include coverage for individuals with disabilities, and individuals suffering from permanent kidney failure. Prescription drug costs and health care coverage are two major issues discussed in relation to Medicare. In addition, in the on-going discussion regarding a universal health care plan for the United States, Medicare features as a major part of the debate.
