Medicine is "a substance or preparation used in the treatment of illness; a drug; esp. one taken by mouth. Also: such substances generally.""1

Medicine is also "the science or practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease (in technical use often taken to exclude surgery)."1
