Topic Overview

A 2004 poll by NPR, the Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government found that only 7% of Americans say sex education has no place in the curriculum. However, what kind of sex education should be taught in public schools remains extremely controversial. School administrators, parents, and public policy officials disagree on exactly what and how much students should be taught. The Bush Administration has advocated an abstinence-only curriculum, but more comprehensive measures, including the distribution of condoms, has proven successful in various settings.
