Topic Overview

With the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act in December 2005, lawmakers have demonstrated their continued commitment to fight domestic violence. Despite such efforts, domestic violence remains an amazingly pervasive problem. According to the CQ Researcher “on a typical day in the United States, three women are murdered by their spouses, ex-spouses or partners -- and thousands more are raped or injured.” Most research on domestic violence focuses on the physical, sexual, or emotional abuse of women and children within the domestic sphere; however, victims of domestic abuse can be any age, sex, or sexual orientation. Domestic violence changes guise in various cultures and contexts, as it comes into contact with different religions, living situations, social norms, and consequences.
