Topic Overview

Months before the 10-year ban on assault weapons was set to expire in September 2004, gun control advocates urged Congress and the President to renew the ban, but the ban was not renewed. The National Rifle Association claims gun control laws violate Second Amendment rights and supported the expiration of the assault weapons ban. On the other side of the issue are groups in favor of stricter gun control laws. In 2000 tens of thousands gathered in cities around the United States for the Million Mom March to support gun control. However, it is difficult to accurately record statistics regarding gun control because of the variables associated with the issue. Gun control is seen as a violation of rights, a necessary protection, a means to deter crime, and an overbearing means of control of American life.
