Key Points
Instructors must supply the Library with a copy of the reading or verify that the reading is already accessible online.
E-reserves are processed by Information Processing &
Management (IPM) on a first-in, first-out basis.
Submit readings as early as possible, but at least several weeks before the start of the
semester if needed for the first day of classes.
Content may be added at any point in the
semester, and will be processed as quickly as possible.
Access to most of the electronic resources listed below
(except the online catalog) requires an active NetID and Active Directory password.
To request and check out print materials from the University of Illinois Library, you will need an active i-Card with a library ID.
Procedures for Placing Material on E-Reserve
If the reading has been on e-reserve before...
Fill out the IPM web form to re-link previous reserve readings.
If this is a new reading and you have a copy to submit...
- Upload an electronic copy of the article or chapter with the IPM web form, OR
- Print out and enclose the E-reserves request cover form and mail a paper copy to
If this is a new reading and you do not have a copy to submit...

Obtaining Materials to Place on E-Reserve
If the reading is a chapter from a printed book...
- Borrow a copy from your own library, OR
- Use your own library’s interlibrary loan service, OR
- Request it from the University of Illinois Library
To request a photocopy or electronic copy of a chapter from a book in the UI Library...
- First search the library catalog to get the complete citation and call number
- Use DocExpress to request a copy of the chapter
- When you receive the copy from DocExpress, submit it using the IPM web form
If the reading is a journal article...
- Determine if the article is available electronically from the University of Illinois Library, or on the open web
- Search the Online Research Resources database to see if the Library subscribes to the journal in electronic format, and to verify that the particular issue you need is available
- If there is an accessible electronic copy of the article, check the appropriate box on the IPM web form
If the article is not available electronically...
- Make a copy from your own library, OR
- Use your own library’s interlibrary loan service, OR
- request it from the University of Illinois Library
To request a photocopy or electronic copy of an article from a print journal owned by the University of Illinois Library...
- Search the library catalog to get the complete citation and call number
- Request an electronic copy of the article through DocExpress
- When you receive the copy from DocExpress, submit it using the IPM web form
