Books: Circulation Policies

As a member of OLLI, you have the following circulation privileges for books:

  • 16 week checkout
  • 10 renewals

You may renew your University of Illinois and I-Share items online or by calling the Telephone Center at 217-333-8400.

If you receive a recall notice via email you must return the item by the new due date, usually within 15 days of the item recall. If the item is not returned on time you will be assessed a $5.00/day late fee (max. $25.00).

There are no late fines for overdue books unless they are overdue 40 days. At this point items will be set to 'lost' and you will charged a minimum of $125 for books and $300 for bound journals.

All OLLI members have access to the Main Library bookstacks, just bring your i-card and ask for a map at the entrance.

Returning Your Books

You may return your University of Illinois and I-Share books to any of the UIUC departmental libraries. There is a drop-off box on the south end of the west parking lot on 6th Street. Since driving on-campus can be very busy during the week, you may drop off books in the box anytime.

How to Find Books

Library Catalog http://www.library.illinois.edu/catalog/

Step One: Online Library Catalog

Search for books in the quick search when you know either the title or the name of the author. Alternatively, you may wish to search by subject. When you locate your item you have two choices. First, you can request the item and pick it up or have it delivered from any of the departmental libraries. Second, you can retrieve the book yourself from either the Main Stacks or the departmental library where the book is located. If you choose this option, make sure you jot down the location and call number of the item.

Step Two: I-Share

Once you have verified that the book you are looking for is either not located in the catalog or all copies are checked out, you may search the I-Share catalog to see if one of the participating institutions has a copy for you to borrow. The process is the same for requesting a book in the I-Share catalog as it is for the Illinois catalog. Items typically arrive within 5-10 days and you will receive an email when the item is available for pick up.

Step Three: Interlibrary Loan at Your Local Public Library

If the item is not available in the Illinois catalog and it is not available through I-Share, then your next stop will be the Interlibrary Loan service at your local public library. First, keep your full citation handy -- you'll need it. Your local library can help you place this request. It will typically take a week or more for items to arrive, so plan ahead. Items that may be more difficult to acquire through Interlibrary Loan include videos and books-on-tape.
