Catalog searching

Searching

A few tips regarding the library catalog.

1. Know your limits. Search limits that is--limit by format (score, recording, film, language, date, etc. These are "sticky"--once you set them they persist until you clear them.

2. Boolean and advanced search. These are your friends. Ex. Balanchine and choreography; or

3. Subject headings. Follow the yellow brick road. Or, click and you shall find.

  • Choreography
  • Dance accompaniment music [recordings and scores for use in dance classes]
  • Dance: Can be used with other subject terms to specify needed terms.
  • Includes anthropological aspects, biography, social aspects, study and teaching (e.g., Dance--Biography).
  • Country or state can also be used to modify the search (e.g., Dance--Africa).
  • Types or styles of dance can be found by coupling the dance name with the term "dance" (e.g. Dance--Ballet, Dance--Aerobic Dancing).
  • Dance types can also be found as singular terms (e.g., Ballroom Dancing, Ballet--History).
  • For information about dance for aging or handicapped, use "dance for the aged" or "dance for the handicapped."
  • Dancing: Only to be used in reference to "dancing injuries"; in all other cases, use "dance".
  • Dancers: Used to refer to specific traits of dancers (e.g. Dancers--wounds and injuries).
  • Baroque Dance
