Topic Overview

The Patriot Act was signed into law by President George W. Bush in October of 2001 following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. The Patriot Act is an acroynm that stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism, and it gave the FBI and other government organizations greater investigation and surveillance powers. Although the act passed with little debate from the house or the senate, it quickly became controversial due to the scope of some of its provisions. Mainly, is the loss of some personal liberties worth the gain in security?
