Mandate for Future NIH Grants
As of May 25, 2008, all NIH
applications, proposals, and progress reports have to include the PubMed
Central reference number (PMCID) when citing a paper that falls under the
policy* and was authored or co-authored by the investigator, or arose
from the investigator’s NIH award. This policy includes applications
submitted to the NIH for the May 25, 2008 due date and subsequent due
dates.
*The Policy applies to you if your peer-reviewed article is based on work directly funded by an NIH grant or cooperative agreement active in Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1, 2007- September 30, 2008) or beyond.
Where do I find the PMCID?
There are several ways to find the PubMed Central ID (PMCID):
- The PMCID number will be in the email that is sent to the PI when their paper is accepted for review by the PubMed Central system.
- If you know the PMID (PubMed ID) you can use the PMID : PMCID Converter to find the PMCID (or vice versa).
- Search the PubMed Central database: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/
NOTE: This is NOT the same as "PubMed"!
A typical citation will look something like this in PubMed Central, where the PMCID has been bolded:
Species differences in brain gene expression profiles associated with adult behavioral maturation in honey bees
Moushumi Sen Sarma, Charles W Whitfield, and Gene E Robinson
BMC Genomics. 2007; 8: 202. Published online 2007 June 29. doi: 10.1186/1471-2164-8-202.
PMCID: PMC1929079
The same citation in PubMed would have looked like this, with the PubMed ID (PMID) bolded:
Sen Sarma M, Whitfield CW, Robinson GE.
Species differences in brain gene expression profiles associated with adult behavioral maturation in honey bees.
BMC Genomics. 2007 Jun 29;8:202.
PMID: 17603883
