Topic Overview

Since the first election in 1789, presidential elections in the United States have generated great excitement and enthusiasm. Although vigorous campaigning by presidential candidates seems standard in today’s day and age, this was not always the case. The Oxford Guide to the United States Government states that general campaigning by members of the Democratic and Republican parties did not begin until 1912, when Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson ran against one another. Whether the candidate is from one of the two major parties or is a member of third-party, campaigning has become a vital part of today’s presidential election process.
