Topic Overview

According to the Oxford Companion to United States History, “poverty has always been a serious problem in America. Throughout its history, large numbers of Americans have been unable to purchase food, shelter, and clothing, or to achieve a reasonable standard of living according to the standards of their time.” The issue of poverty can be studied from many different views. Some examples are from a political, sociological, environmental, and cultural aspect.
