Environmental Films and Festivals

The environment is a popular topic amongst the Hollywood set and in film. From independent documentary to blockbuster entertainment, the environment has been a major theme or subplot to many movies.

There are now several film festivals dedicated to environmental themes that are a great resource for many movies not shown commercially. In the United States, they include:

  • Colorado Environmental Film Festival
This festival models its goals of environmental awareness and action not just by showing topic films, but by reducing waste and recycling, offsetting carbon emissions, encouraging public transportation and carpooling, and supporting local and responsible producers at its events and screenings.
  • Environmental Film Festival at Yale
This student-run festival is free and open to the public and is presented by the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.
  • Miami & The Beaches Environmental Film Festival
This festival specializes in environmental documentaries and contemporary environmental issues. It includes a student film competition as well.
  • Princeton Environmental Film Festival
Sponsored by the Princeton Public Library, this festival was founded in 2006 and focuses on documentary films. Many of the films are available after the festival through the Princeton Library.
  • San Francisco Green Film Festival
This recently founded film festival explores the relationship between people and the planet, and presents year-round community screening and events in the San Francisco Bay Area as well.
  • The Environmental Film Festival in the Nation's Capital
Based in Washington, D.C., this long-running film festival is the largest showcase of environmental film in the United States. The festival "seeks to advance public understanding of the environment through the power of film" and only requires a synopsis to be considered for entry.
  • And More! EcoFootage's List for Environmental Film Festivals
EcoFootage has compiled a list of environmental film festivals for producers, but this is also a great resource for those who are just interested in more festivals!
